Foundation trains Kwara teachers in media literacy skills

1. The Wikipedia Education Foundation team trained 73 Kwara teachers to improve media literacy skills using Wikipedia.

2. The foundation made the announcement at the closing ceremony of the month-long training, Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom (RW-C) Programme, Nigeria 2022, on Thursday in Ilorin.

3. Project manager Ms Bukola James said the training was born out of the need to prioritize open educational resources to develop life-saving media and information literacy (MIL).

4. “This has posed significant challenges for students and teachers who must develop a wide range of abilities to provide a safe and high quality teaching-learning environment in the new normal.

5. “Hence the need for this month-long training program with 73 registered teachers who focused their attention on how they can successfully use Wikipedia projects to access, retrieve, interpret and monitor the information consumed.

6. “This was done by developing open educational resources by adopting UNESCO’s framework on media and literacy using Wikipedia as a learning tool to promote quality education and lifelong learning among students.

seven. “Specifically, the training program has helped teachers to determine the extent to which Nigerian education policies apply and update MIL work plans and curricula,” Ms James said.

8. The project manager explained that 228 teachers applied for the online program and trainees were selected based on their level of ICT proficiency; and two people were chosen from the state’s 16 local government areas.

9. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Ms. Kemi Adeosun, underscored the commitment of the state government to any result-oriented collaborative engagement with credible NGOs, agencies and institutions .

ten. Adeosun, who was represented by Deputy Director of School Services, Mr. Taiye Odedeji, said the RW-C Nigeria project was in line with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s pragmatic approach to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on development human capital.

11. “In particular target 10 of SDG 4 (quality education) which relies on teacher training and development for 21st century teaching and learning through ICT.

12. “It is clear that education is going through a revolutionary process of moving from the four walls of classrooms to the virtual classroom; blackboards are replaced by iPads.
“The Kwara government spares no effort to ensure best practices and global standards in the education sector,” she said.

13. Alhaji Aderibigbe Idiagbon, director of quality assurance for the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), praised the program organizers but called for an increased number of trainees in subsequent editions.

14. From the Teaching Services Commission, Alhaja Falilat Gidado urged the trainees to drop the knowledge when they return to their respective schools.

15. Ms. Bimpe Olani, Director of the National Library of Nigeria, Kwara Branch, said teachers were a catalyst for development, hence the need to develop transferable skills.

16. One of the trainees, Ms Ethel Titus from St Anthony’s Secondary School, told News Agency of Nigeria that she learned how to use Wikipedia to develop her lesson plan.

17. She added that it also helped her break down different topics in different languages.

18. For her part, Ms. Bukola Toye from the Federal Staff School, Adewole, said that although she was previously versatile with the internet, the training had honed her knowledge of exploring anything online.

19. NAN reports that 60 out of 73 participants received certificates and the top five trainees each received vouchers for 5,000 naira at ShopRite.
NAN also reports that Kwara is the pilot state where the training is being implemented in Nigeria.

20. The program is sponsored by the Wikipedia Education Team, as part of the Wikipedia Foundation established in 2001, to promote free knowledge around the world.

21. The UNESCO Framework for Media and Information Literacy was the course module adopted for the programme.
